17” X 11” Francis Paul/Okima Kishik unframed print. Titled Wolf. "The Creator gave the Earth's Original people, through the great prophet and teacher Indodaim, the O-do-i-dayn-iwan (the Clan system). The Great Law of Clans had been given to the people as a way of sacred knowledge and order - a system that became a framework of government, for the unity, strength and social order of Nation. This clan system became the way in which people could and did maintain individual and collective identity without separation from the village, tribe, or the Nation. The Clan system was a complete democracy in its purpose, intent and meaning. Through the Clan was given the right and voice to the People. in the clan system was the right and voice for women, children, young and old, and the unborn. As many duties and responsibilities as may be embrace might produce a leader - man or woman. These persons were called Ogimaw, or leader, and later Chief. In the clan system, with its leadership and representation of all the people, lay the basis of Anishinaabe democracy, law, truth, peace, brotherhood, honor strength, unity and social order. The wolf clan are a sub-clan of the Marten Clan whose head (Chief) is the Martin. Also included in the Marten clan are the Lynx, Weasel, Mink, Otter, Beaver and so on. The Marten clan are warriors, hunters, and providers for a given community. They are a very dedicated people, dedicated to the protection and preservation of their community and are prepared to maintain this at all costs... even if it means their life may be at risk. One can say, well all the Clans are interested in protection and preservation of their community, however, the Marten Clan will not hesitate to take or go a few more steps to ensure the same. The Marten Clan people are also hunters and providers. This Caln, when people are in need of food or protection, will not hesitate to lend a hand to ensure all is well. The Marten Clan, much like the animals of that Clan, are aggressive in nature and will pursue their prey to no end. It seems the Marten Clan people carry that same instinct, but, they use this knowledge and experience for the benefit of the community. Another interesting quality the Marten Clan possess is their willingness to adopt other people into their Clan, usually people that don't know which Clan they're from. In cases of this nature, there are some strings attached... for example, if a Marten Clan will adopt that person into their Clan, however, marriage for that individual would be very questionable, because this person may accidentally marry into their own Clan. The Marten Clan colors are yellow, brown, and black."
